Bob was born on July 30, 1932 in Boyd, Texas to Clem Arthur Spencer and Thelma Cordelia (Matney) Spencer. He grew up in Decatur, Texas where he graduated from Decatur High School. Upon his graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Navy.
While serving in the Navy, he was stationed at little inland naval base near Crows Landing, CA where he met Betty Watson who would become his wife. They moved to Long Beach, CA where he continued to serve aboard the U.S.S. Hamil during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in January 1957 having earned the Good Conduct Medal, First & Second Award.
When his four years of service to his country were complete, he and Betty moved back to Texas where he had a job at Convair (now known as Lockheed) waiting for him. He would retire from Bell Helicopter in 1992. They settled in the little of community of River Oaks, a suburb of Fort Worth, where they would live for 22 years before moving to their home in Azle, Texas. While in Fort Worth they raised two daughters, Deborah and Terry. He served at Trinity Baptist Church as deacon for 18 years until they moved to Azle where he was a member of First Baptist Church of Lakeside for 36 years.
Bob never met a stranger and everyone was named “Sport”. He was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather who gave his family the most precious gift a man can give, a deep and grounded faith in Jesus Christ. As his time to go home drew nearer he was so excited to finally meet Jesus. His family rests in the knowledge that we will see him again. To those of you that knew him or are reading this memoriam, he would want you to know the Jesus that he knows.
He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Lou (Watson) Spencer; his daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah Cartwright and husband, Gary, Terry Harp and husband, Curt; four grandchildren and their spouses, Kim (Cartwright) Jones and husband, Noel, Matt Cartwright and wife, Kimmy, Josh Harp and wife, Toni, Jake Harp and wife, Robyn; six great-grandchildren, Logan, Lucas, Casen, Makayla, Charleigh, and Colton; one sister and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clem; mother, Thelma; brother, Earl.
In lieu of sending flowers the family asks that you make a contribution to the Union Mission Gospel in Fort Worth in his name – Bobby Sam Spencer.
