JJ and I served together and worked side by side in VMA-533 Maintenance Control at Cherry Point and aboard the John F. Kennedy. We often rode to work together, and I had the privilege of calling him my friend for nearly 30 years. A Marine's Marine, JJ loved his Corps and was as steadfast, loyal, and honest a man as I have ever known. Despite his desperate struggle with illness, JJ was always upbeat and positive. He called me several times, and we laughed at old memories. The world is less rich for his passing, but the pearly gates are well guarded. I love ya, brother. Rest easy, we'll see you again on the other side.

Kevin York left a message on December 28, 2017:
JJ followed me at VMFA-112 as the active duty Maintenance Officer. He was, of course, much better at it than me. He loved the Squadron life and most of all the Marines. He would give the shirt of his back literally to any Marine in need. We spent a couple memorable years at MAG-41 when I moved on to the I-level. After I got out , he followed me to American Airlines up at Alliance. We spent quite a time on night crew as supervisors and then in TAESL before he went to Bell and then Lockheed. I was not his Best Friend, only because he had so many, but he was my Best Friend. I spoke to him just a couple days before he passed. He was worried about me. That was the size of his Heart. Prayers to the Family. Know that JJ made his mark. The Yorks will make a donation in his name to the SEMPER FI Fund.

John and I first met our sophomore year at Spencer High School. In the 11th grade we had homeroom together along with Terri (Shiver) Sterling. We became best friends and were known as the "Twins" as we had the exact same birthday. I spent most of Senior year at the Sagul's house. Tremendous family that made me their 9th child. John got me running track and cross country. I cannot tell everyone of the awesome times we had together, God was certainly looking out for us. Love you Twin. Forever in my heart, body & soul. Until we meet again!

Greg Foreman left a message on December 27, 2017:
I have so many great memories of JJ. I met him when I was assigned to Marine Squadron VMA (AW)533. We were pretty much joined at the hip from that time on. Both Med cruises aboard the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY. We went through Drill Instructor School together. And then, even though JJ was promoted and moved off in a different direction in his Marine Corps career, we found ourselves back together during the last cruise of the USS AMERICA. JJ became as a brother to me during those years, and I loved him like he was that. I will surely miss my friend and brother, but I am comforted to know JJ is guarding the streets of gold in heaven. Farewell my brother, until we see each other again. SEMPER FI!!
