Carroll E. Nix was born on October 14, 1940 in Tolar, Texas and passed away on November 16, 2018 at the age of 78. He was a resident of Tolar, Texas at the time of his passing. Service: 2:00 PM, Tuesday, November 20, 2018, Tolar Baptist Church, Interment: Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Visitation: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Monday, November 19, 2018, Wiley Funeral Home Chapel, Granbury. Memorials may be made to Special Olympics. Live plants would be welcome as a floral tribute.
Carroll graduated from Tolar High School in 1959 and attended Tarleton State before eventually graduating from East Texas State University with his bachelor’s degree in Biology. While at Tarleton and East Texas, he was also a member of the football team. Following graduation from East Texas, he completed his doctorate at Oregon State University, graduating with his PhD in Genetics and Biochemistry in 1968. He and his family spent time in Chicago, IL; Fairfax, VA and Oak Ridge, TN before he finally retired back to Tolar with Shirley, his beloved wife of 56 years. After devoting most of his life to research at Oak Ridge National Laboratories. Dr. Nix spent the rest of his life working the Nix family farm in Tolar, Texas. He always had a particular fondness for the mountains of East Tennessee as well as the Oregon coast. He enjoyed reading and cherished his time with all of his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents: Odell and Virgie Nix and his brother Doug Nix.
Carroll is survived by his wife: Shirley Nix, children; Jeffrey Nix and wife Mary, Erica Jenkins and husband Joey, and Monti Woolley and husband Daniel, grandchildren; Chandler, Jacob, Collier, Kelsey, Nelle, Audra, Mattie, Cameron, and Anita, two sisters; Carrie Yvonne Nix (Howell) and husband Bob, and Sylvia Nell Nix (Curry) and husband David and numerous, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
