GRANBURY — Charles Clinton Green, 93, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, in Granbury, Texas.
Graveside service: Military services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at Holly Hills Memorial Park in Granbury. Visitation: The family will receive friends from noon until 1:30 p.m. Monday at Wiley Funeral Home.
Charles C. Green was born August 22, 1921, in Hartshorn, Mo. He moved with his family to Neodesha, Kan. at age two. He graduated from high school there with honors, a Rotary Club scholarship and a letter in track. He was also a boxer in the Golden Gloves competition. He worked his way through high school and college as a janitor receiving his BS and MS degrees from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan.
World War II interrupted his education where he served three years in North Africa, England and Italy. He was part of “Operation Torch” under General Eisenhower and landed at Oran, Algeria on D-3, Nov. 11, 1942. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 16, 1945 and awarded the AME ribbon with one bronze star.
Charles taught in Kansas high schools four years before entering the business world where he worked as an accountant, economist, manager and executive for Sinclair Oil, Gulf Oil, and Lone Star Gas respectively. He was President of the Bonanza Steak House chain and guided it to a listing on the stock exchange.
He was the recipient of the Meritorious Achievement Award from the alumni of Pittsburg State University. He was also awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from his high school. The President of the United States appointed him Director of Health, Education & Welfare for five states of the southwest (HEW).
Mr. Green also ranched in East Texas for several years until his wife, Margaret Ann Tart Green, of 35 years died. He married Louise Schaffer of Dallas, Texas in 1976 and moved from Athens, Texas to Dallas and taught and lectured at the University of Texas at Dallas for seven years before retiring and building a new home in Pecan Plantation near Granbury, Texas. Mr. Green mentored and consulted for several new ventures and invested in real estate.
Mr. Green was a member of the Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon and Elder. He was a life member of the VFW. He has been a passionate worker for justice and education and successful as a husband and father. He left his country better than he found it and made personal sacrifices for it. Preceding him in death were his parents, four sisters and three brothers.
Survivors: Wife, Louise Schaffer Green of Granbury; son, Charles Steven Green of Amarillo; grandsons, Todd Green of Tyler, Chad Green of Las Vegas, Nev.; granddaughter, Amy E. Tucker of Amarillo; great grandchildren, Alizabeth, Benjamin and Gracey Tucker.
