Charles Hughen Kimbro was born on November 7, 1930 to Charles Vance Kimbro and Maglene Zook Kimbro in Tillar, Arkansas. He passed away at home in Frisco, Texas on January 31, 2021. A private family graveside service to be held.
He was known as Charles Hughen or Charley to his Arkansas friends and family and Chuck to everyone else. He spent his childhood in the communities of Tillar and McGehee in the Southeast part of Arkansas. He had a great childhood with many friends and family. He was active in many sports, had a horse named Trigger, and worked a variety of jobs including making deliveries for his family’s grocery store.
After graduating from high school, he served in the US Air Force. During his time in the Air Force, he was introduced to golf which would become a passionate pastime for him for the next 70 years. While stationed in Fort Worth he met the love of his life Helen Laura Henderson from Electra, Texas. They were married in 1955 and had a deep and special love for each other and would comment that they never had an argument in their 55+ years of marriage. After he was discharged from the Air Force they moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas where he became the first masters of geology graduate of the University of Arkansas. He was an avid Arkansas Razorback fan and would call the Hogs often and loudly, much to the chagrin of his children.
With his geology degree Chuck and Helen would take a marriage adventure to several ‘scenic’ locations. He was employed initially by Texaco and moved several times from Midland, to Roswell, NM, to Wichita Falls and back to Midland. In Midland he spent the rest of his professional life working for several independent oil and gas companies and finished his career as a self-employed geologist. He loved geology and could spend hours talking about it to anyone who would listen, even to those who had no clue what he was talking about. On countless family trips he would stop the car so he could look at rocks on the side of the road, smelling and licking the rocks, much to the confusion of his children.
Chuck and Helen had two children, Van born in Fayetteville, Arkansas and Elaine born in Roswell, New Mexico. He was a wonderful and dedicated father, active with his children’s activities, and always diligent in trying to instill core Christian principals. He also had a great love and special relationships with his grandchildren (and spouses) and great grandchildren. From scavenger hunts, dressing up as clowns, money in blocks of ice, Pop and Nannaw made birthdays and holidays very memorable events. He absolutely cherished these relationships.
His Christian faith and his background in the Church of Christ was the most important aspect of his life. He was an avid and dedicated Bible student, spending hours in preparation for teaching Sunday school classes. Although he also served as an elder and deacon at various churches he attended, his passion was always learning and teaching. He never wanted anyone to ever question that he was, first and foremost, a Christ follower. His knowledge and understanding of the time between the old and new testaments were also something he liked to share, sometimes whether you were interested or not.
About 4 years after his wife Helen passed away, he met Linda DeFratus. Only naturally they met at church and would be married a few months later. While he was devastated by the passing of Helen, he felt utterly blessed to have met and married Linda. He would say how lucky he was to have been married to two wonderful Christian women. Linda even agreed to let him teach her golf, a decision many in his family were a bit leery of as to how that would go.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Defratus Kimbro, his son Van Kimbro (Brenda), his daughter Elaine Kimbro Pruett (Joe), his grandchildren Ryan Kimbro (Becky), Kelli Kimbro Liska (Kris), Seth Pruett, Parker Pruett, Cooper Pruett, and his great-grandchildren Kace, Kolt and Kyler Liska. He is also survived by many wonderful Kimbro and Zook family cousins from Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Henderson Kimbro and his parents, Charles Vance and Maglene Zook Kimbro, his brother-in-law Richard Henderson, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Elaine and Bill Wilson, and niece Mimi Henderson.
