Clarence “Doug” Douglass Owen

Clarence Douglass “Doug” Owen, age 83 passed away suddenly Sunday January 10th at his home.

Doug was born on November 30, 1937 in Brownwood, Texas to Clarence Aubrey Owen and Myrtle Davis Owen.  He was the fourth of five children.  Three brothers, James, Doyle, Don and one sister Mary Catherine Lehman.  All passed too early in their lives.  Doug missed and grieved for them through the years.

Doug was raised in the country on a Lion Oil lease that his Father managed close to Lake Brownwood.  He attended school in nearby Bangs, graduating in 1957.  He was small in stature but very determined to play football and was very good at it.  He was offered a scholarship to Cisco Jr. College.  Because of his Father’s bad heart disease, he decided to stay with his family to help them.  A few months later, Lion Oil transferred them to Snyder, Texas.  Doug also worked for Lion Oil in Snyder.

He met his future wife, Mary Lyn, a junior, shortly after moving to Snyder.  They kept running into each other and in 1958 began dating.  They married a week after her High School Graduation on June 4, 1960.  Three days later he left for the US Army after being drafted.  He was gone for two years.  He spent eighteen months in Germany.  His unit was prepared to move forward when the wall went up in Berlin in 1961.  He returned home in 1962.

Doug and Mary Lyn moved to Kermit, Texas soon afterward.  He was employed with Baker Oil Tools, which became Baker Service Tools which later turned into Baker Hughes.  He was with Baker for 38 years.  He started as the Warehouseman, later working in the field as a Down Hole Tool Specialist and then promoted to Manager.  He retired from Baker in 2000 and opened his own Service Company.  He retired from that company in 2005.

Doug and Mary Lyn left Kermit in 2012 after living and raising their children there.  They moved to Granbury, Texas to be closer to family as well as Dyrl and Pat Brownlee in De Leon, Texas, with whom they have had a close friendship for 58 years.  Their family and the Owen family became like one family.

Doug was quite the rebel raiser in his younger years but also a very caring thoughtful and honest man.  He would do anything for his family and friends or even a stranger.  He loved his family with great devotion.  He was a wonderful Christian Man who loved all of God’s animals especially his childhood dog Mickie.

Doug is survived by his Wife, Son, Paul Owen and Daughter, Dana Owen.  His Grandson, Brent Owen and his Wife Megan Lasater Owen, Granddaughter Talia Owen Hirth and her Husband Ben.  One Great Granddaughter Adair Ann Owen and another Great Grandchild on the way.  One Nephew Larry Lehman, two Nieces, Cindy Gentry and Debbie Parish.  He also leaves behind many Great Nephews and Nieces, many dear Cousins and friends.  Anyone who wishes to donate in Doug’s name please do so to The Salvation Army or an animal shelter of your choice.
