PALUXY — Cora Shackelford Holmes Harkins, 94, passed away Monday, Apr. 23, 2012, in Glen Rose.
Funeral: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Apr. 25, 2012, at Wiley Funeral Home in Glen Rose. Interment: Brooks Cemetery in Paluxy. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, Cora and her family have requested donations be made to the charity of your choice in support of continued community services.
Cora was born September 3, 1917 in Somervell County where she was the fourth of nine children born to Jim and Buella Shackelford. She lived all her life in Hood and Somervell counties and attended Dunigan and Paluxy schools.
She married Thomas Holmes February 18, 1935. To this union, her one son Thomas Howard Holmes was born. Before her son was born Cora’s husband Thomas Holmes passed away on May 13, 1935. Cora married Floyd Harkins January 25, 1939. He passed away June 21, 1987. They shared 48 years in a marriage.
She worked seventeen years for Maybelle Manufacturing Company in Granbury. She retired in 1999 as Paluxy Postmaster after 27 and one half years of service in the community she loved.
One of Cora’s greatest passions was the love of her church and living her life as a Christian as a member of the Paluxy Baptist Church. She accepted Christ at an early age and he was truly her Shepherd. She loved her church family and her family deeply. She will be missed by many.
Survivors: Son, Thomas Howard Holmes of Paluxy, Sisters, Vera Sanderson, Inez Parker, Louise McCoy of Glen Rose, Grandsons, Tommy Holmes and wife Donna of Panhandle, Charles Holmes and wife Cindy of Godley, Granddaughter Vickie Marks and husband Gary of Glen Rose. Great Grandchildren, Justin Holmes of San Antonio, Matthew Holmes of San Marcus, Dixie Sikes, and husband Eddie and children, Porter and Lainey of Bellaire, Texas. Jennifer Jones and sons Gus, Jack, and Oliver of North Richland Hills. Brian Marks and wife Jennifer and children Cale, Evan and Ellie of Grapevine. Lucie Warfield and husband Ben and son Asher of Frisco. Also many dear friends, nieces and nephews.
