Dan Alan Davis was born in Lubbock February 5, 1951, to Tom and Loretta Davis. Dan moved to Fort Worth in 1961, graduated from Carter-Riverside High School where he was named Mr. CHS. He was dubbed the “favorite son” by both of his sisters. Dan continued making friends and people smile throughout his life. Dan was active in judging rodeos and competing in bull riding in his early rodeo career, switching to calf roping shortly after marrying his wife Jan in 1975.
Dan was proudly known as Dad to two loving sons and “Grand Dan” to grandson Deak. Dan’s family was the center of his life, and he enjoyed coaching baseball, basketball and any other activity the kids thought they might enjoy. Although Dan started his calf roping career later in life, he excelled in the sport with the help of many close mentors. Dan was a member of the CRA and UPRA rodeo associations and later joined the PRCA ranks qualifying for the Texas Circuit Finals. Family, jobs and other commitments restricted Dan’s ability to rodeo full time, but later Dan and Jan both enjoyed traveling across the country to many Senior Pro Rodeos. Dan enjoyed paying forward the success the mentors gave him in his early career by helping high school calf and breakaway ropers. Dan was also a proud family member of the Parker County Cowboy Church and enjoyed attending the services throughout his illness.
Never a quitter and known best for his line of “Can’t Never Could Do Anything,” he never was seen without his famous smile and willingness to help. Dan was blessed with many friends that continued to support him throughout his battle with cancer and was proud and humbled by the tremendous support.
Dan was preceded in death by parents, Tom and Loretta Davis, and sister, Barbara Calhoun.
He is survived by his wife, Jan Greener Davis; sons, Justin Dean Davis and Jeff Alan Davis and wife, Meredith: grandson, Deak Overton Davis; sister, Mandy Byas and husband, Charles; mother and father-in-law, Fred and Janet Greener: many nieces and nephews; and his sidekick, Ruby.
