Daniel was born in Los Angeles, California on October 27, 1955 to Jack and Mary Johnston. He was the fourth of six children.
In 1973 Daniel graduated from La Puente High School in Los Angeles where he participated in track and field as a cross country runner, and actively supporting his younger brother Robin who competed in pole vaulting. Soon after graduation he joined the Air Force where he served as an Aircraft Maintenance Specialist until 1979. During his time in the service, he was stationed at Luke Air Force Base as a crew chief for the McDonnell Douglas F4C “Phantom” model. His next military assignment sent him to Germany where he had the opportunity to tour Europe. After departing the military, Daniel came to Texas where his parents had relocated and earned his Aircraft and Powerplant license from Texas State Technical College. He then took a job with RAM Corporation at Waco Regional Airport as an Aircraft Mechanic. Drawing on his love of track and field sports, he coached pole vaulting to high school students in the Waco area in his free time. While living in the Waco area Daniel met his future wife Laura and they married on March 7, 1987. In 1988 they moved to Fort Worth where he later started his career with Tarrant County College as an Aviation Lab Manager. He worked for Tarrant County College for 28 years and retired May 2019. His retirement project was restoring a 1968 Datsun 2000 Roadster. This car was his older brother John’s first car that he had given Daniel several years ago. Daniel enjoyed spending time with his family. He never missed an opportunity to attend Jordan and Alia’s school and sporting events.
Daniel was kind, compassionate, and generous who always put others first. Family and friends describe him as selfless, devoted, knowledgeable, and hard working.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Mary Johnston, brother-in-law Kenneth Wells and sister-in-law Dorothy Johnston.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Johnston of the home; his daughter, Marla Carroll and Trey, grandson, Jordan Carroll and granddaughter, Alia Carroll, all of Fort Worth, Texas; brother, John Johnston (Chris) of Antelope, California; sister, Darlena Stevens (Curtis) of Moreno Valley, California; brother, Gordon Johnston (Pat) of Mount Calm, Texas; brother, Robin Johnston of Mount Calm, Texas; and sister, Sheila Wells of Conroe, Texas, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
