FORT WORTH — Dauphin Dwain Whitehead, beloved husband of 65 years to Genera Smith Whitehead, passed peacefully from this earth on Tuesday, December 30, 2014.
Funeral: Celebration and Thanksgiving service will be held Friday, January 2, 2 PM, Arborlawn United Methodist Church, 5001 Briarhaven Road, Fort Worth, TX.
Dauphin was born January 22, 1926, in Fort Worth to W. G. and Maude Elizabeth Whitehead. He grew up in west Texas, attending school in Mount Olive and graduating from Lamesa High School in 1942. He served in the US Navy from 1944-46 in the Asiatic-Pacific Area. He attended Texas Tech University and graduated in May, 1950 with a BA in Psychology. It was in Lubbock, Texas that he met his bride, and began their 65 year marriage. He was a life-long student of Theology, History, and Humanities. He always wanted to know the how and why of human beings. He worked for Temco in Grand Prairie, and farmed outside Grandview, Texas until 1965. In 1965 at the age of 39, he returned to school to pursue a degree in law. He graduated from the University of Texas Law School in August 1967. He maintained a private practice in Arlington from 1970-1991.
He and Genera were founding members of St. Barnabas UMC in Arlington. They enjoyed square dancing with the Diamond Jubilee square dancers and playing forty-two. Following their retirement and move to Granbury in 1992, they became involved with Granbury First UMC, where he served on various church committees and chaired the Building Committee, taught Sunday School classes, Bible studies and maintained a set of church keys. He chaired the Hood County Council on Aging, and participated with Meals on Wheels as well as other organizations in Hood County until he was 86 years old. He contributed his talent, generosity and kindness to all who crossed his path. He enjoyed his vegetable garden and nurtured his rose garden. They moved back to Fort Worth in 2014 to be closer to family and to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grand children.
