David was born March 30, 1948 in Staten Island New York to the late Sebastian G. and Rosemarie C. (Maguire) Matassa. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1965 and retired after 20 years of service. When he retired as he has always said, he just walked across the tarmac and went to work for and later retired from General Dynamics, which later became Lockheed Martin. During his military and civilian careers, he received numerous commendations including one from the Mayor of Daytona Beach, Florida.
David loved drag racing, both as a driver and being part of the pit crew. He also enjoyed softball and was an avid bowler and golfer. He won several awards and trophies in each and received rings for high game and series scores. He had more than one perfect 300 game to his credit. He also enjoyed playing casino slots and sudoku.
He met his wife Gloria, after she beat him racing coming off of a red light and followed her to the drive-in and asked her “what do have under your hood”?
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gloria M. (Taldo) Matassa; daughter, Sharon (Matassa) Voyles and husband Greg; granddaughter, Kristen (Burnett) Neubauer and husband Josh; step-grandson, Nicholas Voyles; great-grandson, Axel Neubauer; step great-grandson, Lucius Neubauer.
