Dr. Newberry was a native Texan, born to Vinton and Nell Newberry. He graduated from Oklahoma Christian University with B.A. degrees in Bible and History and a minor in Education, all while on a track scholarship. He was called to preach at the age of nineteen and soon started leading people to Jesus on the streets of downtown Lubbock.
He and Cheryl, his late wife, of 37 years, had a whirlwind romance and were married six weeks after their first date. They had two children, Darin and Traci, who grew up overseas when they answered the call to missions.
During the 1970’s through 1980, David was the South Africa District Superintendent of the Int’l Assemblies of God for Southern Natal and then for Northern Natal. He did urban and rural ministry in KwaZulu-Natal in apartheid conditions. He held tent meetings, preached among the churches and opened up 10 new works, including building new church buildings.
In the 1980’s, David was Secretary Treasurer of the Executive Committee of the Missionary Fellowship for Southern Africa for the Assemblies of God. The committee provided oversight for 75 missionaries, Bible Schools and a Publishing House.
He was also District Superintendent of the Assemblies of God for Zimbabwe. He oversaw Jimmy Swaggart’s Children’s Child Care food relief efforts along the Zimbabwe-Mozambique border during a time of pronounced drought and regional guerilla warfare.
God connected him for a season with Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke, where he was a guest of the ministry team. He was honored to be ordained by Kenneth E. Hagin and was a part of Rhema Ministerial Association International until his passing.
David focused on evangelism in urban Zimbabwe, with an average of eight crusades a year. His 10,000 seat tent kept filling past capacity and led to having open air meetings. In 2017, Upper Room Ministries honored Dr. Newberry in Harare as he spoke to a gathering of 500 ministers. Many of them testified to receiving their call to the ministry because of the Gospel Crusades.
Dr. Newberry was a dynamic preacher and teacher of the Word of God. He was an apostle of faith, an evangelist and flowed as a prophet. His 56 years of full-time ministry were earmarked by consistent demonstrations of the power of God in healing and miracles. His vision was to help bring in the end-time harvest by the power of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.
He was a high achiever, a visionary; a “big picture” man who enabled many to dream bigger and believe God for what the Bible said they could have.
For 5 years in Zambia, Dr. Newberry pioneered “Miracle Life School of the Bible,” a modular Bible school of 17 classes, with 20 hours of teaching in each class.
He helped fund and build many churches around the world and helped build seven Bible schools internationally. He was a guest on Christian broadcasts with viewership into the millions.
David and Cheryl pastored 11 ½ years of their ministry, including pioneering Miracle Life Family Church, a vibrant church in Zambia, with over a thousand people in attendance. Cheryl passed away in Zambia in 2002.
Dr. Newberry ministered in 47 nations, preaching crusades, holding miracle services, building up churches, teaching in Bible schools and at conferences.
He enjoyed investing into the lives of future leaders. He was a guest instructor at many prestigious Bible institutions nationally and internationally, including Kenneth Copeland Bible College, international Rhema Bible Training Centers, the Assemblies of God Graduate School of Theology in Malawi, and Christ for the Nations Institute. He had a great passion to see the next generation of ministers catch the spirit of faith and learn to flow in the supernatural.
Dr. Newberry was a father in the faith to many and had many spiritual sons and daughters. He was a man of compassion and was always ready to minister to people.
He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree for lifetime ministry achievements by Operation Freedom by the late E. H. Jim Ammerman ThD, DD, CH (Col) USA Retired. Dr. Newberry served on the Board of Directors for the Military Bible Association.
David loved his family. His children enjoyed great times on safari in Africa. He was so proud of his grandchildren and always enjoyed hearing what they were doing. He liked all kinds of sports, especially football. He was an artist, painting in oils and watercolor. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, but his true joy was being a fisher of men.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cheryl Newberry, his father, Vinton Newberry, his mother, Nell Cromer and “Papa”, William Cromer, his grandparents and a sister, Patricia Gayle Jones.
Survivors: David is survived by his son, Darin Newberry and wife, Sharri, and their children, Desiree, Spencer and Suzette Newberry of Tennessee; his daughter, Traci Newberry of Texas; his brothers, Warren Newberry and wife, Annette; Robert Story and wife, Bonita; and Paul Newberry, all of Texas; his sisters, Janice Collins and husband, Bob; Mary Oliver and husband, Ronald; and Susan Cornell and her husband, John, also from Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and longtime friends.
