Elizabeth Matson Ashley (Liz)
December 19, 1932- December 1, 2021
Liz Ashley, a Granbury resident passed away suddenly during the early morning hours Wednesday. She grew up among loving parents, grandparents, cousins and family in Huron South Dakota. Liz attended St. Martins Catholic elementary school, Huron High School graduating in 1950. She spent two years at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, MN where she began a serious application of the artistic talents for which she eventually became noted, then the University of Iowa from which she graduated in 1955 with a degree in Occupational Therapy.
Her first job in that profession was as a teacher at the Sunshine School for cerebral palsy children in San Diego, CA. It was there that she met and married her love of over 63 years, Ray who was a Naval Officer stationed aboard the USS Kearsarge. Their marriage was blessed with two wonderful sons, Ross, age 61 and Dan, age 58. Liz is also survived by a wonderful daughter-in-law, Kathy, married to Ross and a special grandson, Cole, Ross and Kathy’s son.
Liz was a talented artist with a needle and thread as well as watercolor painting. She was active in the Fort Worth Needlework Society as well as the Dallas Needlework Guild and received numerous awards commemorating her artistic talent for many years. She and Ray traveled to Pine Mountain, GA where she studied at the Callaway School of Needlework Arts while Ray toned his golf skills at their championship course. Liz achieved greater success at her needlework skills than Ray in his golf skills.
She had an effervescent personality, loved the people she met and was a true friend to everyone. Burial will be in the Matson family plot in Huron, SD and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
