Florene was born June 28, 1923 in Truman, Arkansas. She married Robert Lee Gourley on March 6, 1942. She attended Business School after high school and later Cameron University. She was an Army wife moving many times. She and her family moved from Truman, Arkansas to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the second time in 1955 from San Antonio, Texas. She and her husband retired in 1983. They moved from Lawton, Oklahoma to Granbury, Texas in 2007 to be near their son and daughter.
Florene was a member of a Baptist church for 75 years until January 2015 when she joined First Christian Church to go with her daughter and son-in-law. She served in many roles in the Baptist church throughout the years including President of the Baptist Women’s Organization. She worked for the Department of the Army, Headquarters of the Field Artillery Center, Fort Sill, Oklahoma as a Financial Management Officer. She received many awards and upon her retirement she received the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service, the highest civilian award. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert of 67 years, a brother John Joseph Forbess of WWII, two sisters Cora Lee Church and Susie Mae Gates, and her parents Joseph and Brooksie Forbess.
Florene is survived by son: Robert Lee Gourley, Jr, and wife Nancy of Frisco, Texas, daughter: Barbara Raye Dennis and husband David of Granbury, Texas, two brothers: Earl Forbess of Sentobia, MS, and Herbert Forbess of Roseburg, Oregon, sister: Bonnie Forbess of Jonesboro, AR, one granddaughter, four grandsons, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
