John Charles Hartwig

Gunnery Sergeant John “Block” Charles Hartwig, AGE 31 was born June 28, 1984  in Dallas, Texas and passed away on  December 18, 2015 in Granbury, Texas. SERVICE 2:00 PM, Monday, December 21, 2015, Wiley Funeral Home Chapel.

Gunnery Sergeant John Charles “Block” Hartwig was a man that lived his life by four principles: Love, Loyalty, Respect and Brotherhood. There are few other words that can be used to describe the way he lived his life. Before anything else, he was a devoted husband and father. He put every ounce of himself into protecting his wife and daughters from the harshness of this world. The love he had for them was almost inconceivable, and everyone that knew him watched his 270lb frame turn into a teddy bear with the word “Daddy”. He was a decorated Marine Corps Combat Veteran. After 12 years and two combat tours, John retired from the Marine Corps, and continued to work with other veterans as a member of the Viet Nam Vets/Legacy Vets MC.  There is no way to summarize John’s life, not only was he a husband, father, son, grandson, brother and uncle, he was a light to many people during their darkest times. He loved as hard as he could, he fought as hard as he could, and he never turned his back on someone that needed him.  John left us with more than just memories, he left us with the example of what a man should be. Even though he left us too soon, he showed us we should all strive to make a difference in other peoples’ lives the way he did.

Survived by His wife, Christa Hartwig, His children, Addison and Kennedy, Father Carl Hartwig, Jr., Mother, Sondra Davis, Grandparents Carl and Bobbie Hartwig, Sr.,  Brothers and Sister Jennifer Sampson, Justin and Kate Speake, Erik Oliver, Stephen Davis,   A number of  Nieces and Nephews, Cousin, Justin, Brothers of the Red and Black, Brothers in the Marine Corps.
