Harold W. Ames

GRANBURY — Harold W. Ames, 94, passed away Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015, at his home in Acton.
Service: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Acton Baptist Church.
Interment: Acton Cemetery.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wiley Funeral Home and 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Acton Baptist Church.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Acton Baptist Church Mission Fund.

Harold was born Sept. 12, 1920, in Gainesville, Texas, to Lee Arthur Ames and Lucille Williford Ames. He graduated from Ranger High School and went to San Angelo State University. Harold was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served aboard the USS Makin Island. On returning from the war Harold went to work in the aircraft industry and retired from General Dynamics in 1975. He married Geneva Wright on May 7, 1943.

Harold enjoyed working on his 30 acre farm and was tending his cows well into his 90’s. In his younger days he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Harold was a member of the Hood County Rescue Unit and enjoyed serving with his three sons. He enjoyed football and watched all three sons play for the Granbury Pirates. Harold’s oldest son, Poggie, played on the 1966 Pirate team that went to the state playoffs. The entire Ames family made the trip to the playoff’s and were active Pirate supporters. In 1993 Harold watched a grandson play football in Mineral Wells on the same field he had played on as a teenager. Harold along with his wife and sons hosted an annual Naval reunion for the survivors of the USS Makin Island.

Harold’s greatest joy was the time spent with his family. The family enjoyed Sunday meals and football; holiday meals followed by arrowhead hunts; and boating and swimming on Lake Granbury. Harold enjoyed traveling especially to visit his sons and families and was blessed to have all his son’s living in Acton and attending Acton Baptist Church together. He was a member of Acton Baptist Church for over 60 years where he attended regularly prior to his passing. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife of 55 years, Geneva Wright Ames, sisters, Joyce Ames, Dorothy Keener.

Survivors: Sons, Poggie Ames and wife, Sherry, Dan Ames and wife, Diann, Fred Ames and wife, Carol; 12 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; sister, Helen Echols; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Harold will be missed by all those he left behind.
