James (Jim) Charles Elrod, Jr. was born to Hazel Lewis Jackson and James Charles Elrod, Sr. on May 5, 1942 in Mountain Home, Arkansas. He spent his childhood years in Azle, Texas. Jim was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from Jan. 1960 to Feb. 1968. On February 10, 1967, he married Brenda Carolyn Avery. They went on to have four sons; James Stephen Elrod, who died shortly after birth; Jason C. Elrod of Hillsboro, OR; Chris C. Elrod of Minnetonka, MN; and Jeffrey S. Elrod of Granbury, TX.
Jim loved being outside. You could often find him on his lawn tractor, in the massive garden with Brenda or sitting on the back porch enjoying the view with a cup of coffee nearby. And if Jim was inside, it was guaranteed that a Western was on the television. If there was a Western movie or television program made, Jim had probably seen it and had seen it more than once. Jim was a man of few words. He quietly loved his family, interjecting humorous comments just when you thought he wasn’t listening and often spoiling his wife of more than 55 years with flowers, a new wardrobe, or jewelry, sometimes which he had made himself.
Jim is survived by his wife and best friend Brenda. Loving father of Jason Elrod (wife Lisa), Chris Elrod (wife Sandra), and Jeff Elrod. Proud grandfather of Clayton Elrod, Avery Elrod, Harley Elrod, McKayla Elrod Collins, Austin Elrod, Allison Elrod, and Sean Elrod. Loving great-grandfather of Zayden Collins and Charlotte Elrod. He is also survived by 1 sister and 3 brothers.
Jim was preceded in death by his son James Stephen Elrod and 3 sisters.
