Joel E. “Joey” Lawson, 65, was welcomed into heaven, November 1, 2014.

Service: A family gathering and service to honor Joel will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Biggers Funeral Chapel. A memorial and celebration of Joel’s life and career will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Lakeshore Drive Baptist Church, 200 South Lakeshore Drive, Hudson Oaks, TX 76087.

Born in Stamford, June 26, 1949, Joel graduated from Stamford High School in 1967. He went on to letter in football at Texas Christian University where he was a defensive lineman for the Frogs for the 1967-1969 seasons. He then graduated from Texas Tech University with a BS in Physical Education and an MA in Education from Western New Mexico University.

Joel married Linda Stewart on December 26, 1969 and had served in the Texas Army National Guard. He recently retired from Texas Education after 41 years as a teacher, coach, and principal in various Texas cities.

Joel was preceded in death by his father, Bill, his mother, Betty, and his grandparents, Effie and Ethridge Lawson of Stamford.

Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda; a son, Ryan and wife Jodi of Frisco; daughter, Charis and husband Richard David of Benbrook; and grandchildren, Cade, Kelan, and Emily Lawson all of Frisco.

Linda, I was so sad to hear of Joel's passing. He was a great leader in the public school system and a very respected Christian man.

Linda, I am so sorry for your loss. May God wrap you in his warmth and love during this time of sadness.

Joey was one of the nicest upper class man in Stamford High. He will be missed by all former students of his time. He was well loved. May God be with his family.

my sincere condolences to the family. joey and myself grew up together beginning in 3rd grade thru high school. we were 'attached at the hip' during those years and i have many fond memories of time spent with him. a great friend!

What an amazing man, he will be missed. Joel was the first principal I worked for when I became a teacher and coach, and one of the best.

Easy to remember Joey as a good friend and Upperclassman. He was a true Bulldog and carried these traits throughout his life. May the love and peace of Jesus Christ surround all family and friends.

Linda and family, I'm so sad to hear of your loss. Everyone who was fortunate enough to work for Mr. Lawson mourns with you all today. He was such a kind and generous man, truly an inspiration who made coming to work every day fun. It was like family, and we were supported like family. I'm especially saddened for you, Linda. It was obvious to all how much Mr. Lawson loved you and his family. It was especially nice to see the two of you together because the love you shared was obvious to everyone. Joel was a fantastic Godly man. We are so proud that we had an opportunity to get to know him and that our children had him as a role model in school. He will be missed greatly.

I am so sad to hear about Joey's passing. We are cousins and enjoyed talking about our family genealogy. Though it's been several years since we spoke, I was so glad to share stories with him. Will miss him very much. My thoughts and prayers go out to to Linda and his children at this time.

Coach Lawson was my 6th grade science teacher and we loved him! That was so long ago, but I remember he loved his students and wanted us to succeed.
