Luther Berry “Hoppy” York, 87, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Biggers Funeral Chapel. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. prior to the service.
Luther was born January 5, 1928, in Fort Worth, the son of Emmit York and Nora Jane York. Luther was one of 12 children, five brothers and six sisters. During Luther’s younger days he was quite an accomplished musician playing the guitar and singing in numerous bands. Luther loved to listen to music, especially country and gospel. He met the love of his life, Betty Ring, in January 1944 and they married on April 20, 1946. She affectionately became “Boots” to him.
After his children started coming, he began his career as a truck driver and later working in the concrete industry. His latest career was at Charley’s Concrete in which he worked from 1989-2010, retiring at the age of 82. Luther was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church and a resident of Sansom Park for over 68 years.
Luther loved his family and friends and was a man of few words, but his actions spoke of the kind of man he was in stature. He will be remembered by his family and friends as someone with a kind heart, quick wit and generous to those he loved. His family would like to say to Hoppy, “this is not goodbye, but we will see you on the other side.”
He is survived by his wife, Betty York; sons, Barry York and wife, Dianne, Tony York and wife, Pam, Mark York and wife, Cheryl, Tim York and wife, Tonie; daughter, Lori Drake; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandchild; and numerous neices, nephews and friends.
