Merl Weldon Mitchell passed away peacefully and with dignity on April 28, 2022, at the age of 95, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was born April 21, 1927, in Somervell County, Texas, to John Edward Mitchell and Carrie Mae Newman Mitchell.
Merl was a lifelong Christian who loved his church and serving the Lord. He was also a proud Disabled American Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during both World War II and the Korean War. He was a cattle rancher for most of his life, and also worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 31-1/2 years.
Never to be seen without his cowboy hat and boots, Merl had a wonderful sense of humor and was an animated storyteller who enjoyed discussing politics, doing word puzzles to keep his mind sharp, and having coffee and talking with his many lifelong friends. He also had a keen interest in history and genealogy. He was instrumental in obtaining historical status from the Texas Historical Commission for the Post Oak Cemetery, where he was a trustee for many years and where he will be laid to rest, just a few miles from where he was born.
Merl was a devoted and loving husband, father, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Mary Katherine Mitchell; his children and their spouses, Weldon E. Mitchell (Tevyan) and Melissa “Missy” Mitchell Leon (David); his brother, James D. Mitchell; his sisters, Valdena Myer and Tressina Downs; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of almost 50 years, Dorothy Delores Mitchell; his brothers, Glenn Edward Mitchell and John Perry Mitchell; and his sisters, Nadine Conway and Peggy D. Harkins.
The family is very grateful for all the care and support provided by Lee Healthcare.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Monday, May 2, 2022, at Wiley Funeral Home in Glen Rose. Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at Wiley Funeral Home in Glen Rose with Pastor Juan Flores officiating. Interment will be in Post Oak Cemetery following the service.
