Rita Ann Doyle Smith, loving mother, grandmother and friend, passed peacefully Monday, June 1, 2015, after a long battle with dementia and a short battle with lung cancer.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Ashcreek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Biggers Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association of North Central Texas or the American Lung Association.
Rita was born May 4, 1944, to James Harvey Doyle and Rita Annie Winnett Doyle. She grew up and lived most of her life in Azle. She was the first Miss Flame winner in Azle in 1960 at the age of 16. She attended Azle schools and graduated from Texas Wesleyan with an accounting degree and later received her CPA license.
She worked for the government, starting with GSA/Federal Protective Services and retiring from the Department of Defense.
Rita traveled for the government, teaching basic self-defense and rape prevention in the early 1970s under a pilot program called “Women’s Alert” to curb the increasing violence against women.
The family would like to thank Vitas and Brookdale Memory Care Center for their guidance during her last few days and Comfort Keepers for their help in caring for her these last years in her home.
Rita is survived by her daughter, Andrea Hagler Lash and husband, Dan; granddaughters, Marina Lash and Victoria Lash; daughter, Melissa Smith Hubbard; granddaughter, Ashlee Hubbard; brother, James Craig Doyle and wife, Stephanie; stepbrother, Johnny Jordan and wife, Cindy; stepsister, Kathy Baker and husband, Chris; and several nieces and nephews.
