Robert Olon Wingard of Granbury, TX was called home by our Heavenly Father on August 2, 2019 at the age of 79.
Born on September 15, 1939, in Austin, TX, Robert was the beloved second son of Robert Stanley and Ruby Victoria Wingard of Lockhart, TX. He is survived by his wife Carol, daughters Melinda Hall and Jennifer Harrison, grandchildren Abigail and Meredith Hall, Zoe and Declan Harrison, brothers Ronald, Jimmy, and Terry, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will be especially missed by his beloved Airedale Terrier Maggie.
Robert grew up in Austin and graduated from Travis High School in 1957.
As a young adult, Robert and his lifelong friend, Terry Wilkinson of San Antonio, TX enjoyed fishing in many of the area lakes around Austin.
Robert attended the University of Texas Austin prior to beginning a 37 year career with the Department of Treasury IRS Collection Division. He received the Gallatin Award, the Treasury Department’s highest career service award, when he retired in 1995.
During their 29 years of marriage, Robert and Carol had many interesting adventures as they enjoyed golfing, hiking, and RVing around the United States and Canada. He was an avid photographer and his photograph of the Perry Park Country Club Signature Hole in Larkspur was selected as the cover photo for the 1997 Colorado Golf Magazine.
Deeply interested in genealogy, Robert traced his mother’s lineage to Lunenberg, Nova Scotia and was working on a book about his Acadian ancestors and their journeys. He traced his father’s lineage back through the Civil War.
Even as a young boy, Robert enjoyed baseball and played on little league teams with his long time friend Richard Bothmer of Brookline, NH. He was an avid Houston Astros fan who attended the first exhibition game played at the Astrodome on April 9, 1965, and was elated when the Astros finally won the World Series in 2017. He and Carol were at the stadium when Nolan Ryan threw his 7th and final no hitter on May 01, 1991.
Robert will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Let us rejoice knowing he is in heaven with his Creator.
To honor Robert on his 80th Birthday, a Celebration of Life has been scheduled on September 15th from 2 pm to 4 pm at Decordova Bend Estates Country Club,
