Robert was born in the city of Sherman in Grayson County Texas, and was the son of the late Max Yeager Shelton and Edith Stout Shelton. As a young man he spent many hours working his family’s wheat farm and cattle ranch, playing baseball, and spending time outdoors learning about nature’s wonders near Lake Texoma.
Robert (also known as Bob) graduated from Texas Christian University with a degree in Business, and he was also a pitcher on the TCU baseball team. During his 4-year college baseball career at TCU, Robert was never struck out when he went up to bat. He was an avid and fantastically skilled golfer, often shooting par for the courses he played, as well as a hole in one. After retirement, he enjoyed weekly golf or fishing with his friends in Pecan Plantation, followed by gatherings at a variety of local eateries.
Robert’s career in industrial engineering began with General Motors where he attended GM University. Over the course of his career, he was employed by Liberty Mutual Insurance, General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Dresser Industries, Continental Conveyor, Redman Industries, General Dynamics, and Lockheed Martin. He was a licensed Real Estate Broker for over 50 years and at one time trained bird dogs with the famed Hoppy Hopson, and spoke often of his favorite dog Sport.
He was a member of the TCU Frog Club, TCU Ex-Lettermen’s Association, the Brazos River Sportsman’s Club, and Pecan Plantation Archery/Airgun Club. He served as the President of the Brazos River Sportman’s Club for several years. When he lived in Westworth Village, he served on various committees, and was elected to the City Council of Westworth Village, Texas.
Robert was a lifelong outdoor enthusiast where he enjoyed many hours of camping, fishing, and hunting with family and friends. As his boys were growing up, they made an annual trip to Lake Texoma on 4th of July weekend for 17 years in a row. In later years when he lived in Westworth Village, Robert and family traversed the U.S. in various RVs, raised Texas Long Horns, Sika deer, a variety of goats, horses, and geese. He was a registered Jack Russel Terrier breeder for nine years, and won several ‘Go to Ground’ events with his dog Putter. Robert also enjoyed learning new things and had many hobbies, including gemology, genealogy, reloading, leatherworking, making custom golf clubs, flint knapping, and primitive bow making.
Robert was very knowledgeable of game, fish, and plant life, being able to identify dozens of species, trees and greens by memory, and grew various native and non-native plants and trees at his home in Granbury. He was a true outdoorsman, and encouraged his family and friends to enjoy the great outdoors and appreciate all nature has to offer. In later years, his favorite pursuit was fishing, and his most treasured memory was fishing with his grandchildren, Haley and Stryder, from the banks of the Brazos River behind his home.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Joseph Max Shelton, and twin sisters who died shortly after their birth.
Robert is survived by his wife, Mona Carty Shelton, three sons, Gregory M. Shelton, Michael Shelton, and Brian Shelton, two stepchildren, Afton Strain and Geordan Strain, daughter-in-law, Jessica Quintanilla-Shelton, and two grandchildren, Haley Shelton and Stryder Shelton. Other survivors include the three daughters of Joseph Max Shelton and their families, mother-in-law, Janis Carty, brother-in-law, Gary Carty, his wife, Heather, their daughter, Mackenzie, and the mother of Robert’s three sons, Glenda Shelton.
