Sorry to hear of Tom's passing. Tom was often my Delta copilot who was outstanding in every way I can think of, and an honor to have flown with.
Brian Muirhead left a message on May 8, 2021:
I first flew with Tom when I was a “new guy” flight engineer on the Boeing 727 at DFW. He was my First Officer and was very kind in explaining our Captain’s pet peeves and quirks. We enjoyed a lot of great layovers together. Of the thousands of guys I flew with over the course of my Delta career, Tom was one I always stopped and chatted with when we occasionally ran into each other passing through an airport or lately when we crossed paths in Granbury. I regret that we never became closer friends as I see in his obituary, we shared many of the same interests. I will miss just knowing that Tom is around. My heartfelt condolences to the family of this great guy.

I will miss Tom very much. Tom was a great man and friend. I have too many memories to list here but I will cherish them all and remember how lucky I was to have known him. Condolences and love.
Tom and Gayle Rhines left a message on May 7, 2021:
Since I first flew with Tom at Delta 25 years ago, (he was the first Captain I flew with), he has been a special friend of our family. Tom always took time to call when we hadn’t seen each other in awhile to see how our kids were doing and check up on Gayle. (He even loaned his kids 4-wheelers to ours to use when his were too big to ride them until his grandkids came along for them to ride!). Tom was truly a family man that cared about others as much as his own family. He will be missed by both Gayle and myself and our kids.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

We know that Tom is now flying up high with Our Lord and Savior. We were blessed to have met him and Shelley. His love and admiration for Aviation will be felt across the skies. Will love, David and Theresa

Sad to hear a good Friend and Patriot I've known since 1986 when we were flying Phantoms at the 301st FW/457th FS at Carswell/NAS Ft Worth. A Great Pilot that truly enjoyed flying and now you have earned the ultimate Wings! We also continued our great friendship while working at Lockheed supporting CATBird and the F-35 Program. I will truly miss you. God Bless you and your wonderful family!

I had the privilege to work with Tom for many years. Without question one of the most talented and outstanding individuals I have ever known. No words will ever do justice to the impact that he has left on the people who knew him… ALWAYS had a smile on his face and NEVER met a stranger. With deepest sympathy to Tom’s family… the world is a smaller place without his presence - we are diminished. God Speed my friend.

Tom was a man with many talents, a great friend to many, and a heart of gold. Flying west now with wings of an angel into the eternal sunset called heaven. But only Tom has afterburner because he installed it himself so he can go vertical, if needed. It was a privilege and honor to be a friend of such a great man. God speed, Tom!
Richard Copeland left a message on May 5, 2021:
Tom was so much more than a flight instructor to me! He was a dear friend and mentor who taught me as much about life as he did flying. His calm demeanor and confidence inspiring attitude made me feel like I could learn anything if I set my mind to it. Tom taught me everything I know about flying. He took me from 0 hours through my PPL. Not long after, he taught me every aerobatic maneuver our Citabria is placarded for. I extend my deepest condolences to Shelley and family. Tom will be sorely missed by my family and neighborhood. Guys like Tom are one in a million - I consider myself blessed to have known him.

Tom was one of the most talented and humble aviators I have ever met. I will miss his wisdom and that confident smile. This world ain’t the same without him.

I so remember what a gracious host Tom was in his home. How he loved the indoor-outdoor living and how he made us all feel so welcomed and at home. He had a great, big smile and eyes twinkled when he talked about his planes... Tom was blessed to find Shelley to walk through these final days of struggle and to have her hold on to him and love him through it all!
