Born November 19,1935 in Pampa, Texas
Parents Dr. H.H. Hicks and Dr. Emily Tiedman Hicks.

 

Don attended High School 9th and 10th grades in Pampa, Texas and 11th and 12th grades at Wentworth Military Academy & College in Lexington, Missouri where he earned 4 college scholarships. He attended A&M then transferred to TCU 1954 – 1957. He graduated from TCU with BS Degrees in Social Studies, P.E and First Aid & Health. He also did Graduate Studies in History at Howard Payne University and University of Houston. He received a graduate degree in Vocational Education from East Texas State University. Don was a Charter Member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity while attending TCU.

 

He was in the Fort Bliss U.S Army Unit of Army Air Defense Command from 1955-1957.

 

He was a coach and teacher:
1958-1959 – Paschal, Ft. Worth
1959-1963 Midland,
1963-1964 Llano
1964- 1965 McCamey
1965 -1966 Cisco
1966 – 1990 Midland
He was a member of Texas High School Football Coaches Association. He retired from Midland Lee High School after 33 years as teacher and coach in 1990. He and Tommie retired to D C B E in Granbury, Texas.

 

Don married Tommie Nell McCormick of Lampasas, Texas June 30, 1956.  He was preceded in death by both of his parents; his in-laws Thomas & Nelda McCormick; and brother-in-law Captain Tim O’Keefe.

 

Survived by wife of 64 years Tommie; sons Dr. & Mrs. Brent Hicks and family of Ft. Worth, Gregory & Chris Hicks and family of McKinney; brother Dr. Jon & Rosemary Hicks; sister-in-law Martha & (Trevor) Lamont and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Private Graveside services will be held at Watson Cemetery near Lampasas, Texas; built by Tommie’s grandfather Ed Watson.  Don will Lie in State, Friday December 11, 2020, 9 am – 8 pm, Wiley Funeral Home, Granbury.

Memorials to Scholarship Fund at First Christian Church Granbury, Texas.

 

We wish to thank Dr. Ruston Jennings and his nurses and our Hospice nurses Jessica and Shellea for the wonderful care they gave Don.
