Betty Jean (Lasater) Young went to be with her Lord and Savior the evening of February 8, 2021 following COVID19 recovery complications, surrounded by family, her favorite hymns and scriptures. Betty would have been 92 in April. She was born in 1929 on the Granny Lasater Farm in Avondale, to Jessamine Wade Lasater and Luther McKindree Lasater, Sr. Betty had six siblings and joins her bothers, Luther, Robby, Bobby and Wade in heaven. Her best friend and sister, Susie Lasater Isbell and baby brother, Terry Lasater will miss her dearly. The Lasater siblings grew up in Haslet and Betty graduated from Haslet High School in 1945, later attending the University of North Texas before marrying childhood friend, James Harold Young in 1947.
The couple lived in Haslet, raised their three children. Betty was an active member of the PTA and city council. She was a devoted church member at First Baptist Church of Haslet for more than 50 years and served as church hostess and the president of the church’s chapter of WMU (Woman’s Missionary Union). Betty had a 20-year career at Union Bank and later worked within the city government, and as the co-owner of R&Y Restaurant (also known as B&G’s) in Saginaw. One of her favorite work experiences was with Wendy Kent Churchill, the President and CEO of Frank Kent Cadillac in Fort Worth. This later influenced her in the purchase of her bright red “so-they’ll-see-me-coming” Cadillac! Another special work experience for Betty was with the American Paint Horse Association. After her tenure there, Harold and Betty later moved to Bridgeport and she worked for the Fort Worth Boat Club until retirement. Betty spent the last 20 years living in North Richland Hills where she helped care for her granddaughter, McKenzie.
With Betty’s smart, witty and cheerful personality, she was the shining light and matriarch of the family. She personally referenced verses like Deuteronomy 31:6 and Philippians 4:6-7 often, which tells us not to be anxious about anything and cast all worries on the God that brings us peace. Bringing together people over good food was one of her favorite pastimes (she was an excellent cook) and she enjoyed quilting, reading, studying the genealogy of the Lasaters and Youngs and caring for family.
Betty was a beloved best friend and family member to many. Left behind to cherish her life are her three children, Gayla Smith and husband, Randy, Cathy Gary and husband, Richard and Jimmy Young; her siblings, Susie and Terry; six grandchildren, Corey, Jeremy, Megan, Caitlin, Rachel and McKenzie; five great-grandchildren, Jack, Mason, Gage, Everly and Imogen.
