June Pamela Lockett June 8, 1926 – December 30, 2019

I wanted to share a few words from family members as they learned of June’s passing. Julie Semears Highly said “What a beautiful strong spirit she was.” Niece Linda Lockett said “Always a proper lady.” The staff at the nursing home asked me if she had always been such a sweet lady. Of course I answered yes. But she was so much more. June was resilient, intelligent, kind, and intellectually curious. Those are just a few of the qualities I would use to describe her. June was also charitable. Her favorite charity was the Presbyterian Children’s fund. June was more than my sister in-law she was my friend.
June made many friends after moving to Texas. She was active in the Retired Military Wives Club for a number of years, she was also a member of the Texas Agrilife Extension Service Tarrant County and a longtime member of John Knox Presbyterian Church. Many of her friends from the church are here today.

My husband Darrell Lockett was 10 years old the first time he met June in Estill County Kentucky. He and the other six siblings, still at home, were mesmerized by her accent. They had never heard anyone talk like that and as my husband describes it, all seven children lined up like stair steps peeking around the door just to listen to her talk. Darrell’s memory of June is that she was the only adult who took the time to speak to each one of the children, asking each of them how they were. Not something that was done during those days. It made a lifelong impression on him and he loved her dearly.

I first met June at the only Lockett Family reunion where all seventeen brothers, sisters and spouses were able to attend in 1977. It was quite a gathering. Even though June and I had nothing in common we struck up a friendship that lasted all these years. We didn’t always see eye to eye on everything and in those rare instances she would simply and politely say “I don’t agree” and that was the end of that! I loved her spirit, her resilience, and her faith in God and belief that everything would work out exactly as God planned it.
I can’t begin to know what it was like being a teenager during WW 2 and the bombing of England, but June did not see her experience as remarkable, because according to her, “everyone was going through the same thing”. I think this attitude is what carried her through many difficult times.

I want to thank my family for embracing June as part of our family. After April passed away, June and Chuck often spent the holidays with our extended family. They also jumped in and helped where ever they could during the last six months.
June touched many more lives than she will ever know. We will miss her greatly but we are blessed to have had her as part of our lives for so many years. God Speed June.

June was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles; daughter, April Lockett Haury and son-in-law, Emil Charles Haury, Sr.
