Mr. Fleming was the best coach, teacher, and friend I could have had in my formative years. If not for him I would not have gotten into UT. He spent endless hours playing basketball with us and tutoring algebra. He was just the best mentor and I loved him dearly.

My mom Janet (Evans) and I would like to express our deepest condolences to you Doug, Mike and family. I know that this will be said over and over again in the coming day and weeks, but your dad was a truly great man who influenced the lives of so many young people. Even now, so many years after our time together in Mertzon, we speak of him often. My father held him in the highest esteem also. Got to talk to him many times during high school. My grades were very good (A honor roll), but I (apparently) chose to hang around with trouble-makers, and he was the one that chose to talk to me about "choices" and how those could impact my future. It was actually Mr. Fleming that put the idea of joining the military in my head, and within 2 years after graduating in 1972, I became career military and served in the USAF for 21 years. Now, as I go into retirement myself, I can reflect on the positive choices I made, partially due to the advice Mr Fleming gave me.
