Athol Joseph “A.J./Joe” Edmondson, 83, passed away from this life Monday, November 19, 2012, at his home to go be with the Lord.
Service: 2 p.m. Monday, November 26, in Biggers Funeral Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Biggers Funeral Home.
“A.J., Joe, Poppy” was born Sunday, February 17, 1929, in Copperas Cove to W.J. and Fern Albright Edmondson. He grew up in San Saba and graduated from San Saba High School in 1947. In 1948, he went to what was once Tarleton College. In 1950, he moved to Fort Worth, where he met his future wife, Jo, at West Berry Church of Christ. They were married July 12, 1952. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After he was discharged from the Army, they lived in Fort Worth and later moved to Austin, where he received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Texas. He taught high school in Dallas for two years and later moved back to Fort Worth, where he taught at Trimble Tech High School for 13 years. In 1973, they moved back to Austin where he worked as a disability examiner for the Texas Rehabilitation Commission. In 1987 they retired and moved to Saginaw to be closer to family.
After he retired, he started his own roofing business. He retired from roofing at age 66. He was a kind, wonderful, generous man who easily made friends wherever he went. Most of all, he loved his family, friends and God. He was a good husband, the best daddy ever and the most awesome poppy in the universe to his sweet sugarplum girl, Shelby Jo Bounds, who has always been the light, love and joy of his life.
A.J. was an avid deer hunter and also enjoyed fishing. He especially enjoyed deer hunting in San Saba County with his favorite nephew, Jason Patterson. He was a member of the Church of Christ, and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Athol was preceded in death by his wife, Jo, who was his life partner of 42 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents, W.J. and Fern Edmondson.
Survivors include his daughter, Kim Bounds and husband, Tom, of Saginaw; siblings, Azalee Tatum and husband, Ben, of Weatherford, Cloyd Edmondson of Goldthwaite, Ann Allan of Lampassas and Mary Throckmorton and husband, Billy, of Burleson; grandchildren, Shelby Jo Bounds and Hennessey W. Bounds, both of Saginaw; many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family; and a host of friends.
