Barbara Jean Raus, 84, went to meet her Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 27, 2017. A Celebration of her Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, May 5, 2017 at Lakeside Baptist Church, Granbury, Texas.
Barbara was born on June 27, 1932 to Leonard and Beulah Hutchison in Oklahoma City, and her childhood years were spent in Tuttle, Oklahoma where her parents were cotton farmers. She moved to Tulsa and finished public school there, graduating from Daniel Webster High School in 1950 and began her college studies at Baylor University the following Fall. She was “born again” while young and her life focus was serving her Lord and sharing the Gospel.
She met her future husband in Junior high school, and married Robert (Bob) Raus years later in 1952. Their honeymoon consisted of three years in Alaska while Bob was serving in the Air Force. Following his tour of duty, they both went back to Baylor and earned their degrees.
Barbara’s professional life centered around Adult Education. She taught in the public schools early in her teaching career, but her real love was working with adults, professionally and in church. She earned a Master’s degree in Adult Education and for more than 30 years taught in the prison setting (county, state, and federal), helping inmates earn their GED and basic education skills. In 1995 -1996 Barbara was named the “Outstanding Teacher of the Year” in Texas by the Texas Association for Literacy & Adult Education.
Barbara had a great love for the outdoors and travelling. She enjoyed camping, gardening, and had a special love for the mountains. Having lived in Alaska, Oregon, and West Virginia she had them close by, but wherever she lived, she recognized the beauty of God’s creation. She lived in seven states, visited all 50 states and several foreign countries.
She loved, and was loved by a wonderful family. Her husband of 64 years, Dr. Bob Raus, and her two sons, Stephen Paul and David Michael, were the focus of her life, and their well-being was central to her life mission. She is survived by her husband; her two sons; her sister, Joyce Marie Ponder; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Raus; granddaughter, Summer Renee; and three great- grandchildren, Autumn, Tristan, and Maddie.
