Carmitta was born Carmitta Joy Hoover on October 1, 1934, in the Littlefield Bend area of Parker County. She was the youngest of 10 children born to Tom and Clemmie Gracie Hoover.
Carmitta played in the country with her brothers and sisters and listened to stories of an unsettled Texas from visiting relatives. Carmitta’s family moved several times; however, Carmitta studied at Weatherford schools. She graduated from Weatherford High School in 1953. She pursued higher education at Weatherford Junior College and earned an associate degree in 1955. Following the example set by her brothers and sisters, Carmitta worked during high school and college at the Palace Theatre in Weatherford. Employment at Acme Brick Co. in Fort Worth followed from 1955 to 1960.
Carmitta partnered with Charles Henry in life and marriage on July 30, 1960. Their match continued for 53 years until Carmitta’s passing.
Carmitta was a member of the Church of Christ and faithfully attended services until health concerns impeded her ability to be in the sanctuary.
She enjoyed painting, writing and most of all being with her family. Carmitta devoted the years after leaving work outside the house to creating and enhancing a home for her husband, two daughters and five grandchildren. Born with only limited use of her right arm, Carmitta changed cloth diapers, cooked meals, drove her daughters to piano lessons and many school activities, helped Charles build a lake house and dock, and even gave skiing lessons in Colorado a hearty try.
Carmitta was preceded in death by her parents; sisters; and other brothers.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Henry of Lakeside; daughters, Brenda Johnson of Springtown and Kathie Cox of Alto; sons-in-law, Robert Johnson and Howard Cox; grandchildren, Kristie Parker, Cody Johnson, Scott Cox, Anne Cox and Adam Johnson; brothers, Dwight Hoover and wife, Melba, and Donald Hoover and wife, Peggy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
