Charlie was born in Hobbs, New Mexico to parents Randall and Evelyn Thompson. He was the youngest of three children which included his sister Patsy and his brother Leon, who survives him. He grew up in Hobbs and graduated from Hobbs High School in 1957. He attended Eastern New Mexico University where he earned a bachelor’s degree, was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and was on the golf team. Charlie was drafted into the US Army in 1966 and served at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He was a military police officer and earned the rank of Sergeant. In 1969, Charlie moved to Ocala, Florida, where he was employed in the construction industry and ultimately formed his own company. He was active in the community and served as president of the Ocala Rotary Club.
After moving back to his home state of New Mexico in 1980 to work in the oil business for a short time, Charlie pursued his love for golf as a scratch golfer. He moved back to El Paso in 1985, where he furthered his career in the construction industry. He relocated to Granbury, Texas in 1998 where he met and married Lillie Louise Turner Ferris. They formed C & L Thompson Construction Company for which he was a builder of many homes in the North Texas area. Charlie was an avid sports enthusiast and was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan. He also loved the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Mavericks.
Charlie is survived by his wife Louise and her children Brad and Charlotte; son Russell, his wife Erin and their daughter Grace; and son John, his wife Amanda and their children Kenzie and Jackson.
