Mr. Long was born April 27, 1921, in LeBlanc, La. He did not mind the hard work on the family farm during those difficult times of the Depression, but he was ready to move on after graduating from high school in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps before World War II. He saw the war coming, so he joined before the government draft. During World War II he served in North Africa and Italy. Later, he also served in the Korean War and Vietnam War. Ironically, after 30 years of military duty, he returned to his love of gardening and raising animals on a small homestead near Granbury.
On Feb. 22, 1943, C.J. married Mildred B. Smith of Blytheville, Ark. They were blessed with three children, Toni Lee Qualls and husband, Vic, of White Hall, Ark., Clyde B. Long and wife, Connie, of Hamilton, Miss., and Robert T. Long and wife, Mary, of Helote.
Shortly after retiring and moving to Granbury, Milly passed away on Aug. 1, 1973. She was buried in Holly Hills Memorial Park in Granbury.
On Aug. 23, 1975, C.J. married Lillian Harrison of Fort Worth. Her children are Charles E. Harrison and wife, Gloria, of Azle, Patricia A. Armstrong and husband, David, of Butte, Mont., Linda D. Miers and husband, John, of Aledo. In time, his children and stepchildren were to give him 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
C.J. and Lil enjoyed their First United Methodist Church and it’s many activities until her death July 5, 2005. C.J. continued service in his church until his poor health in 2010 prohibited his attendance.
