John & Joyce Cummins left a message on November 2, 2017:
Gene and Charmaine were the kind of people who, once you met them, it was always the greatest pleasure to see them again. No matter their situation, their concern was for others at all times. The last words Gene spoke to us, were his sincere thanks for all we'd done for them. Nothing we ever said or did for them, compares to what they did for us. They were the finest example of how we are to live, humbly and as true Christian servants. Although Gene was a living part of our nation's history, his personality lacked any boastfulness. He spoke of the incident not to draw attention to himself, but to answer questions that could only be addressed by someone who was there. He wanted the world to know what he had seen, and how something like that would affect its witnesses for a lifetime. One more way in which Gene shared, and cared. Our deepest sympathies go out to his wonderful family.

A memory of Gene & Charmaine Boone. On Christmas Day, Charmaine's Mother's family had a reunion attended by many relatives. Gene and Charmaine were married the night before. That was the first time I had seen Gene. It seemed he had a habit of winking at people quite often - just a quick cute little wink. I think that day he did it more often because he was so happy. After all the night before he had married, as far as I was concerned, the most beautiful girl in the world - my cousin, Charmaine Breckenridge. They had chosen matching wedding bands and Charmaine said "this band is going to be on my finger a long time", and sure enough it was for 58 years. They were very close. Bonnie L.
