Eunice Buckley

Eunice Ruth Buckley peacefully made her journey home to be with her Lord on February 5, 2019 after over 97 healthy years here with us in this life.

She was born on June 28, 1921 to Raymond Vaupel Baker and Ida Sorteberg Baker in Madison, MN. She was the oldest of 8 siblings where she was not only a sister but also a mother figure and family patriarch that kept the family connected through the years and generations.

She grew up in Minnesota and graduated from Milbank High School in South Dakota in 1939. Soon after, Eunice Ruth Baker met and married Clayton Leroy Buckley in a Lutheran Church in Houston, TX on March 11, 1944. This beautiful union kept them both smiling, laughing & loving through 59 years of marriage. What a great team they made together in business and in life. What humor he had and in perfect paring, she teased him right back as she let out her wholehearted laugh that will never be forgotten.

Eunice & Clayton built a beautiful life together where they worked hard together side by side at their Tank Trailer Sales company and enjoyed life to the fullest with friends and family as they traveled around the country in their Vogue motorhomes with their beloved boxer dogs. They lived in South Dakota, Kansas and made Texas their home in 1952. They moved to De Cordova Bend Estates in Granbury, TX in 1983, which was their forever home. While they never had their own children, Eunice & Clayton loved their many boxer dogs through the years with more love and care than some children ever receive. Their beloved boxers had portraits painted & stained-glass windows made in their image. There were even initials of their dog’s names in a custom iron door in their home. I can still picture Eunice mixing up home cooked food for her dogs literally with her hands. Eunice and Clayton loved all of their dogs as their children.

Their love, generosity and time were also given freely to all of their family and friends. They were more than a sibling, aunt, uncle, friend or neighbor. They were who you could always count on for love, laughs and advice.

Eunice was born of the age of hard work, common sense & saving verses tossing what you could use again. She emulated these in her life always. Eunice held many jobs such as a stenographer and bookkeeper. For their own Tank Trailer Sales Company, she was the bookkeeper and Clayton’s right hand person. Eunice prided herself in her bookkeeping skills which kept her busy into her later years of life. She was a remarkable seamstress always making herself a new outfit that she always topped with a string of pearls. Eunice was a “Do It Yourself” kind of person before DIY was even a thing. She refinished countless wood cabinets and other items herself as she wanted them a particular way or color and, in the end, she knew she could do it best herself!

What a blessing Eunice and Clayton were to all of us. They were the fun Aunt & Uncle with houses on lakes, boats, swimming pools, dogs, motorhomes and even the first car phone! Their house was always the gathering place for family. The true blessing, they gave each other and modeled for the rest of us was their love and respect.

I’m certain that when Eunice and Clayton’s souls were reunited that he said with his witty charm & mischievous grin, as he took his pipe from his mouth, “Eunice, what took you so long?” and I bet Eunice let out one of her great laughs and explained she had to finish all of the projects she had started. Eunice, you definitely completed all of your earthly projects and left the world more beautiful because of your life. Eunice probably already has some remodeling plans for heaven!

Eunice was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clayton L. Buckley in 2003, her parents, 3 brothers; Kenneth Baker, Virgil Baker, David Baker & her sister Dorothy Farquhar. She is survived by 2 sisters; Joyce Monger and Barbara Galland; her brother Leslie Baker; and sister-in-law Betty Bob Buckley and many nieces, nephews and friends that will always remember her, miss her and love her.
