Garrett was born July 30, 1931 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
to Chester and Esther (Allen) Hults, graduated from St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire and attended Colgate University. He was married to Anne Thorpe in 1962. Throughout Garrett’s life he often remembered his years of singing in the choir, rowing crew and playing hockey at St. Paul’s and then playing hockey at Colgate. Garrett’s career began in the aerospace industry
with Boeing and included leadership roles at various companies. His most enjoyable employment was at the end of his career as a vice-president at Trappey’s Foods in New Iberia, Louisiana. His true passions were family, church and hobbies including woodworking, landscaping, cooking, skiing, camping and travel to each of the 50 states and throughout Europe. Wherever he lived, he was active in the Episcopal Church as a joyous singer in the choir and often as a vestry member and senior warden. His homes always contained many colonial-style furniture pieces that he designed and made.
