George Anna began asserting both her charm and determination at the tender age of four, insisting that she accompany big brother W.T. to first grade. Sure that the experience would not measure up to little George Anna’s expectations, her parents didn’t stand in her way, suspecting that she would do an about-face and return home quickly. Twelve years later, she and W.T. graduated together from Caddo High School. The next fall, the two enrolled at Tarleton State University, where George Anna earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration in 1939.
Soon after graduating, she accepted a job in a general practitioner’s medical office in Breckenridge, where she did everything from administrative work to medical assisting. She carried this experience with her thereafter, fearlessly and confidently taking care of friends, neighbors and loved ones throughout her lifetime.
While working in Breckenridge, George Anna met and fell in love with a handsome young man, Charles Victor Harris, who was working as a ditch digger for Phillips Petroleum Company. As their romance blossomed, Charles was assigned to Norfolk, Virginia for naval training. He reportedly asked George Anna if she wanted to accompany him to Virginia, whereupon she promptly planned their wedding. The two often joked about how he had never actually proposed marriage, and that Charles had just done what he was told
