Lloyd Kennedy, 89, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2017. Memorial service: 12:00 PM, Monday, September 11, 2017, Granbury Church of Christ, Interment: 9:15 AM, Monday, September 11, 2017, Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. Lloyd (formal name James Lloyd Kennedy) was born on January 28, 1928, 2 ½ miles southwest of Clyde, Texas at his grandmother’s house out in the country. Wink, Texas was his home for a few years until the family moved to Haskell, Texas. He was the oldest of eight children, two boys and six girls. He enjoyed the loving support of a VERY HARD WORKING mother and Father, Mary Jo Kennedy and James W. Kennedy, and the aforementioned brother and sisters. The Church of Christ was his affiliation for all of his 89 years. He served as an Elder at Bering Drive Church of Christ in Houston.
Lloyd attended all years of public grade and high school at Haskell. He entered Abilene Christian College on June 4, 1945. He attended college for a year and a half at ACC after which, on August 20, 1946, he entered the Army. Basic training was at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and he then transferred to Holabird Signal Depot for Counter Intelligence Corps training. Subsequently he was assigned to company headquarters in Kyoto, Japan. His responsibilities included preparing an intelligence report for distribution throughout the Far East military offices. The date of his discharge was December 8, 1947, and afterward he returned to Texas to re-enter Abilene Christian in the spring of 1948.
Lloyd was married to Betsy Maude Kindred, who incidentally asked him out for the first date, on August 20, 1949. He graduated from ACC in 1950. He was employed by Shell on September 25, 1950. Retirement from Shell occurred on February 1, 1988. His Shell assignments took him to Kilgore, Texas, New Orleans, Louisiana, Compton, California, New York City, and Houston, where he spent the vast majority of his career.
While working full time, he earned an LL.B. at South Texas College of Law in 1964. He was recognized for finishing first in his law school class. After he transferred to the New York City office of Shell in 1966, he earned a second law degree, an LL.M. at NYU, in 1969. He was preceded in death by his parents and two of his sisters: Glenda and Marjorie.
Lloyd is survived by his wife Betsy Kennedy, children: James L. Kennedy Jr. “Jim” and wife Jo, Kerry Kennedy Carlton and husband Kirk, and Sue Anne Kennedy Braddock and husband Randy, grandchildren: Marla Hartsell and husband Lance, Leah Welch and husband Brian, David Carlton and wife Sonya, Dane Carlton and wife Abby, Sarah Ellis and husband Hunter, Brittan Braddock and Brooke Braddock, five great grandchildren, four sisters: Janelle, Sandra, Mary, and Martha and one brother: Weldon, and many accomplished nieces and nephews.
