Julie Jo Hanson (81) of Fort Worth, TX, left this earth peacefully on January 30, 2022 surrounded by her devoted family after a long battle with chronic COPD.
She was born in Washington, Iowa on March 6, 1940, to Curtis Wayne and Laurene Elizabeth (Dircks) Wells. Julie graduated from Washington High School in 1958, and then attended St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Covington, KY, where she received her degree in nursing.
On December 8, 1961, she married Donald L. Hanson and together they raised seven children (known to many as the 7 C’s.) Julie spent her early married life working as a nurse in Iowa City, Iowa.In 1967, she and Don moved back to Washington, where they lived until moving to Fort Worth, TX in 1983. During this time, she volunteered with Planned Parenthood in Washington, and was the first female elected to the Washington City Council.
During her time in Iowa, she enjoyed playing golf, bridge club, attending her childrens’ swim meets, traveling with family and friends, and being an all-time chauffeur to many in the famous Hanson “limo.”
With the move to Texas, her house quickly became the gathering place for her kids’ many new friends, many who still consider the Hanson house as their second home.
For almost 20 years, she and Don worked together running their construction business. They continued to travel together in their motorhome, and occasional snorkeling trips to Bonaire.
After Don’s passing in 2002, Julie spent many years driving the country to see her children, grandchildren and friends. She also enjoyed cruising, cosmos, casinos and Christmas!
Julie is survived by her children: Curt (Alicia) Hanson, McKinney, TX, Carolyn (Joe) Walsh, Fort Worth, TX, Cathy (Jack) Walsh, Fort Worth, TX, Chris (Sheila) Hanson, Washington, IA, Caryn (Gary) Perkins, Mesa, AZ, and Casey Jo Hanson, Monroe, GA; Grandchildren: Hannah Perkins Toll (Kameron), Kalyn Hanson Milburn (Nate), Emily Walsh Stults (Matt), Hayden Perkins, Madelyn Walsh, Halana Perkins (fiancé Monikkah), Dylan Pettway, Logan Hanson, Miles Pettway, Carter Hanson, and Lincoln Hanson; Great Grandchildren: Wesley Milburn, Layton Stults, Noelle Milburn, Ila Toll and baby girl Stults, expected in July 2022; Siblings and In-Laws: Greta Wells and Rebecca (Wayne) Kaufman, and brother-in-law Ken Hanson, of Washington, IA and sister-in-law Avis Wells-Smith, Coralville, IA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The largest group of survivors are the extended family members and friends who knew and loved her as “Grammy”.
Julie was preceded in death by her husband Don; son, Coy Dale Hanson; parents, Curtis and Laurene Wells; in-laws, Allan and Florence (Steckel) Hanson, brother, James (Butch) Wells, sister and brother-in-law, Kirtene and Frank Bruty, newborn nephew Bryan Bruty, and sister-in-law, Rosemary Hanson.
