GLEN ROSE — Linley Scott Wright, 90, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2012 in Glen Rose.
Service: 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Glen Rose. Burial: Squaw Creek Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Wiley Funeral Home. Memorials: Gideons International or charity of choice.
Linley was born July 20, 1921 in San Francisco, Calif. to Linley Arpie and Maud Marie Bunker Wright. He worked in the civilian pilot training program for the U.S. Navy and then the U.S. Army. He then enlisted and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He spent 1 1/2 years in Jorhat, India transporting supplies over the Himalayan Mountains, the “hump”, to supply the Chinese Army. When he returned from the war, he married Martha Elizabeth Gillard on February 14, 1946 in Weatherford. He was hired by Pioneer Airlines that later merged with Continental Airlines and flew for them until he retired in 1981. After retirement he continued to mentor and instruct many young pilots and loved his position of the wise man riding the camel in the local production, “The Promise”. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Glen Rose. He was also a member of the Gideon International, Cherokee Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America and a lifetime member of EAA, Hump Pilots Association, OX-5 Club and many other aviation organizations. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on March 15, 2012; and grandsons, Russell Barnett Vanlandingham and Jason Vanlandingham.
Survivors: Children, Danella Rae Gray, Carol Lynn and husband, Sam Daniel, Toni Kay Naccache and Patti Marie and husband, Mark Flanary; grandchildren, Lynnette Randall, Jana Gray, Dustin Vanlandingham, Sam H. Daniel IV, Bethany Robertson, Mireille Dailey, Joelle Ogletree, Lindsey Flanary, Kara Verbeek and Kaylee Flanary; 15 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren.
