Mark Stewart Phillips was born to Jack and Geraldine Phillips on September 17, 1966, in Kijabe, Kenya. He passed away on June 3, 2020, in Glen Rose, Texas, after a four month journey with cancer. Service: 2:00 PM. Saturday, June 6, 2020, Grace Community Church, Glen Rose, Interment: Squaw Creek Cemetery.
Mark lived a full life which impacted people around the globe. He was reared in the country of Kenya, in East Africa. After graduating high school at Rift Valley Academy, he attended Kansas State University where he earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. He next attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned his Master’s of Divinity.
Mark and his wife Cara (Kirkpatrick) were high school sweethearts who were married on December 17, 1988.
Mark and Cara returned to Kenya in 1996, where they taught and ministered at a Kenyan high school for two years. In 1998, they returned to the USA, and he began working at Riverbend Retreat Center in Glen Rose, Texas, in 1999. The family went back to East Africa in 2003 and lived and worked in Tanzania. Mark primarily focused on building relationships and assisting with a group translating the Bible into the local language of Kilughuru. This legacy continues, as the translation is nearly finished. The men he discipled during that time continue in the work and are involved in multiple other translations as well. In 2009, the Phillips family moved back to Glen Rose, Texas. After several odd jobs, Mark began working as an education specialist at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. This combined his love of creation and his passion for education.
Mark delighted in creation, but even more so, he delighted in the Creator. His life’s desire was to know Jesus better and to make Him known to others. Mark lived and loved fully.
Mark is survived by Cara and their four children and two sons-in-law: Caitlynn and Ryan Bernardy, Laurynn and Blake Randall, Benjamin Phillips, and Natalynn Phillips. Family members also include his mother Geraldine Coon and step-father Roger Coon, sisters Deborah Tegtmeier and Rebekah Schuit and their spouses, brothers John Phillips and Peter Phillips and their spouses, and many nieces and nephews.
Soli Deo Gloria.
