Miriam Nelson, 81, of Granbury, Texas passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018 in Plano, Texas. Miriam was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and devoted friend who will be missed by everyone who experienced her love and friendship. She never met a stranger and loved to strike up conversation with people she met along her life’s journey. She lived a life of faith and had a generous spirit. Miriam was born in Waco, Texas on May 9, 1936 to Reverend Roy Smith and Leticia Hughey Smith. She attended Waco High School followed by Decatur Baptist College. She then met and married the love of her life, Allen. They followed his career from College Station, Texas to Springdale, Arkansas and Dallas, Texas. Following their retirement, they moved to Granbury, Texas where they spent many happy years enjoying the beauty of the Brazos River. She loved to travel, read and she was a fabulous cook, but raising her family was her most treasured accomplishment.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Allen D. Nelson, and brother, Frank Hughey Smith. She is survived by son, David Nelson and wife Tracy, daughter, Karen Harris and husband Cliff. Grandchildren Kyle Nelson, Chase Nelson, Brigitte Hook, Katie Harris, Alden Harris, Cassie Vasquez, Andrew Harris, Matt Harris, Jason Harris, and ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She will lie in state at Wiley Funeral Home in Granbury, Texas on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 13-14. 2018 and funeral services will be at DFW National Cemetery on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 11:00 AM. Pallbearers will be Kyle Nelson, Chase Nelson, Jason Harris, Andrew Harris, Matt Harris and Matt Vasquez. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Heart Association.
