He received a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture in 1961 and a Master’s degree in Forest Management in 1976. Phil met his wife of 50 years, Marcia McLure, while at Oregon State. He started his career with the Oregon State Highway Department in Salem, Oregon. In 1961, he joined the U.S. Army and was in Monterey, Calif. for three years. After returning to Oregon, he continued with the State Highway Department, and then started a 10 year career with the U.S. Forest Service, working throughout Oregon. In 1977, he moved to Fort Worth to work for what was the Soil Conservation Service until he retired in 1994. He and Marcia moved to Granbury in 1993, where they built a house in DeCordova. They spent 15 wonderful years traveling the world, with many trips traveling to both coasts to visit their daughters.

He also worked with Habitat for Humanity, and Good Shepherd Episcopal Church USA. He started the first online newspaper for DCBE, was an avid Master swimmer, taught chair caning and calligraphy at Tarleton State Langdon Center. He was an AARP tax consultant and served on the Hood County Library Board, the Texas Ramp Project and the Mid-Cities Stamp Club. He enjoyed his many friendships on and off the golf course at DCBE.
