Phillip W. “Phil” Land passed away on December 26, 2021. He was surrounded by his loving family who will forever cherish the legacy of this exceptional cowboy.
Service: 3 pm, Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at Will Rogers Memorial Center Auditorium.
Visitation is scheduled for 1 pm-3 pm prior to the service at the same location.
Phil was born on August 28, 1954, in Fort Worth, Texas to Carl Land Jr. & Ann Elizabeth Land.
Phil retired from Central Freight before becoming the “Cow-Man” for the National Cutting Horse Association. A role in which he had just finished his 31st year with the Association before his crossing over the rainbow bridge.
Phil was often described as a man of few words. But those who knew him well, knew that quite the opposite was the case when discussing topics, he loved. Most of all, his beloved wife Teresa who was the love of his life. A fact he would tell anyone when he had the opportunity. They brought out the best in each other and were the perfect example of best friends and soul mates.
He will be lovingly remembered for his distinctive whistle, calming voice, twinkling eyes and charming smirk. People who knew him best knew him as The Cow-Man, Brother, Meathead, Philly Cheese Steak and Phyllis. The adventures that earned each of these nicknames will be closely protected in Phil’s spirit of loyalty and friendship. He loved his country and the western way of life. His knowledge of cattle, horsemanship, training techniques and equine pedigrees was renowned.
He was a cowboy to his very core, and professionally managed cattle for various Associations and Horse Show Producers in a variety of disciplines. His cattle were always exceptionally managed and cared for as if they were his own. Phil’s commitment to excellence ensured that cattle producers across the country would confidently send their cattle to be used in competition knowing they would return in top condition. His influence is imbedded in countless trophies and buckles earned by competitors who all have the upmost respect for Phil.
While we may no longer see him in the cattle pens and alleyways behind the arenas and practice pens, his presence will forever be felt by those who loved him most. The cowboys who come after him have been deeply influenced by his loving mentorship.
He was reunited in heaven with his Parents, Ann Land & Carl Land Jr, and his Brother-In-Law, Charlie Morenus.
He is survived by his loving wife, Teresa; their children, John & Brittany Anderson; his Grand Girls, who affectionately claimed him as their PawPaw, Sophie and Bentlie; Daughter, Cheyenne Land; Niece, Megan Thrasher; Sister, Teresa Morenus; Niece, Marianne (Husband, Chad); Nephew, Michael (Kelly Brock) Morenus; two Great-Nephews, Zander & Zeke Howard; countless friends who loved him like family, and his faithful companion Mia. As well as numerous horses who will carry on his legacy and continue to fulfill his dreams and goals for generations to come.
He will be truly missed, but we can all rejoice that he is healthy, strong and no doubt mounted on the best horses working the best cattle in green pastures.
