GRANBURY — “Poggie” Harold Weldon Ames, Jr., passed away peacefully in Fort Worth Tuesday, Mar. 29, 2016, surrounded by his family.
Funeral: 10:00 a.m. Friday, Apr. 1, 2016, at Acton Baptist Church.
Burial: Acton Cemetery.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wiley Funeral Home.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Granbury Volunteer Fire Department.
Poggie was born Dec. 2, 1948, the oldest son of Harold Weldon Ames, Sr. and Geneva “Gen” Wright Ames. He graduated in 1967 from Granbury High School and attended Howard Payne University on a football scholarship. He was allstate lineman for the 1966 Granbury High School’s state finalist football team. Currently an annual award for outstanding lineman is given bearing his name. Poggie worked for Brown and Root for many years and was one of the workers who helped build Lake Granbury.
He started volunteering with the Hood County Rescue Unit in 1968. The Granbury Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue United merged in 1996 where he was grandfathered into the fire department. Throughout his many years of service he held many ranks including the title of captain. He is currently an honorary member. Many lives were touched by him throughout the years.
Several years were spent away from his hometown of Granbury living in West Texas and the Houston area building oil rigs as he was a master welder. The Ames Family and Friends won People’s Choice for the Bean Cook-off in the Annual General Granbury’s Birthday Bash for many years.
Dec. 23, 1987, he married the love of his life, Sherry Lynn Spencer Ames at the Granbury Courthouse and they moved back to Granbury.
He started A&A Welding operating out of a shop that he built next to his home. He later opened two other locations with his brother Dan.
Poggie was a wonderful husband, father, grandpa and great grandfather. He devoted his life to helping others through his volunteer work. He loved spending time surrounded by his family and friends. If he knew you, you were family. He enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, boating and figuring out any problem or puzzle you could throw at him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Geneva Ames.
Survivors: Wife, Sherry Ames; daughter, Melissa Adams of Granbury; son, Roman Molina and wife, Lana, of Burleson; son, Brad Ames and wife, Kristi, of Granbury; daughter, Melinda Hickey and husband, Bill, of Granbury; son, Nick Molina and wife, Ermelinda of Chico; grandchildren, Jessica Wray, Austin Adams, Bryan Hickey, Nathan Hickey, Matthew Hickey, Kadi Hickey, Lauren Ames, Ashley Molina, Lane Snow, Hayleigh Molina, Nick Molina, Jr., Angel Molina, Markus Molina, Alonzo Molina, Jaciel Guerro, Diego Guerro; great grandchild, Brayden Wray; brothers, Dan Ames and wife Diann, Fred Ames and wife Carol; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
