Mom came to know the Lord and was saved at twelve years old and was baptized at Saginaw Park Baptist Church in 1970. She was strong in her faith and told us all of how she went to church alone for many years as a young girl. For us boys, growing up we have so many fond memories of that church where we stayed members as a family till the early 1990’s. She would drag us there every Sunday just to have us fall asleep in the pews. It was ok though, we had to save our energy for the game of tag in the courtyard with our cousins once the preacher was done. After church, every Sunday, we would all go to Nana and Grandad’s (Dorothy and Bob) house to watch the Cowboy’s. Those were special times for Mom and us all. Mom never stopped loving the Lord, no matter what life threw at her.
She had other loves too, especially her Grandkids and her chickens! Her Grandkids, much more than her chickens, were her reason for fighting to live these last years. She wanted desperately to see them each grow up and be like their parents. They are so very special to her, and she will love them forever, and can’t wait to see them again in heaven with her. She loved Jim and the home and life he built for her that they shared together. She loved going to the Ranch on the weekends and missed their time together there. Besides family and friends, she loved books and movies. Her favorite book was the King James Bible, which she read in a year. To Kill a Mockingbird, that taught her to hate racism and to respect everyone regardless of the color of their skin. Lonesome Dove, which taught her how to keep a promise. Terms of Endearment, that taught her it’s ok to talk about cancer. The Cowboys, which taught her that a good man starts out being a good boy, and lastly The Notebook her favorite love story. She loved all kinds of movies also. Her favorite funny movies were The Great Outdoors, My Cousin Vinny and Uncle Buck. Her more serious favorites were Rear Window, Spencer’s Mountain, Streets of Laredo, and Steel Magnolia’s. She thought the casting of Rear Window was pure genius, and she had a great admiration for Grace Kelley, and also another princess, Princess Diana. What someone likes often says a lot about a person, and these movies were special to Mom and made her laugh; took her back to simpler times where morals, ethics and love was pure; and especially reminded her of the special people and relationships in her life. She and her Mom (Dorothy Mae), saw Steel Magnolia’s together and cried like babies. She loved music, particularly old Gospel music and hymns, as well as anything by Mercy Me, Chris Tomlin, George Straight, Garth or Reba.
She has been an inspiration to so many of us, and an encouragement to countless others over the years. For many years she was treasurer of the Tarrant County Junior Livestock Show, and judged scholarship awards each year at the Windy Ryan and North Texas Rodeo. She loved farm animals and wanted to encourage youth to raise animals and go to college and the rodeo suited her just fine. She was a published author, a blue-ribbon winning cook 42 times over at the State Fair of Texas, and she made a mean BBQ sauce, but most importantly was her personal touch. She knitted over 30 baby blankets that she loved to give away every time a new bundle of joy entered her life. She was a dental assistant for most of her professional career and loved working with Dr. Jeff and his staff which all have been lifelong friends.
Words cannot express what she means to us, she is an amazing person and will be sorely missed by all.
She leaves behind her husband, Jim Gaskin; son, Clay Stevenson and his wife, Melissa with their kids Ella, Emry and Evan; son, Dustin Stevenson and his wife, Kristina with their boys, Tyler and Matthew; brother, Robert Baker and his wife, Kathy with their daughters, Dayna, Alison and grandson, Chase.
She is preceded in death by her Mom and Dad, Dorothy Mae and Robert E Baker.
She made a difference in all our lives, as well as the lives of many others. She taught many of us how to love and live, and so many other wonderful things not the least of which is to love God.
She was an incredible Mom. She wanted you to know that she loves each of you very much, and if you’re reading this you are special to her. Her girlfriends, church, cancer ya ya’s, brother, family, aunts, cousins, coworkers past and present. She loves you very much and you are special to her.
