GRANBURY — Richard Glenn Vaughn, 90, a Navy Lieutenant Commander, who retired from active duty in 1969 in Colorado Springs, Colo., died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, in Granbury.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Wiley Funeral Home. Inurnment will be held at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery at a later date.
Commander Vaughn served 23 years on active duty and another 15 years as a civilian employee of the Navy. He was a carrier-based fighter pilot during World War Two and during the Korean War. He served on the aircraft carriers Ranger, Seaboney, Coral Sea, Lake Champlain, Boxer and Essex during his active duty naval career. He served with the North American Air Defense Command for three and a half years. He also performed tours of duty in Japan, Hawaii and with the Office of Naval Intellignece in Washington, DC. When he retired from civil service in 1984, he was Director of Security at the Naval Intelligence Command in Suitland, Md. Commander Vaughn held the Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Korean Combat Service Medal, Korean Presidential Citation as well as several medals of service in the European and China Theatre and the Superior Civilian Service medal from the Naval Intelligence Command.
Commander Vaughn was born in Baylor County, Texas, in 1922, the son of William Edgar Vaughn and Annie Laura Havins. He graduated from Olton High School in Olton, Texas, in 1941 and entered the Navy in 1942. He was married to the love of his life, Martha L. Clemmer, in Hamilton, Texas, on August 24, 1944. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland. In retirement, he lived with his wife, Martha, in Lusby, Md. and in Granbury, Texas.
Survivors: Wife of 68 years, Martha of Granbury; sons, Richard W. and wife, Cindy Lou, of Fort Worth, Phillip D. and wife, Carolyn, of Waldorf, Md.; daughter, Rebecca L. Caldow and husband, Brian, of Granbury; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
