Royce Lee Stacy passed away Friday, July 28, 2017. Visitation: Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from 6-8 pm. Service: 11:00 am, Thursday, August 3, 2017, Wiley Funeral Home Chapel, Glen Rose, Interment: Nancy Smith Cemetery, Glen Rose.
Royce was a proud Texan. He (and his parents) had never lived anywhere other than Texas. In fact Royce was born here in Glen Rose in the Milling Hospital on October 4th 1943. Royce went to school from first grade through high school in Glen Rose. The only school in town back then was what is now the Junior High School. Royce said you entered first grade at one end of the building, and when you got to the other end, you graduated! Royce loved learning and was always very smart. In fact half way through third grade he was moved up to fourth grade and so finished school a year early. Even with that he graduated Salutatorian of his class.
Royce was an only child until he was 10 when his sister Lana was born. When it came her time to start school, she didn’t share his enthusiasm. She refused to go! It became Royce’s job to drag her, kicking and screaming, in to her classroom every day. Very convenient since they were in the same school building!
From Glen Rose, Royce went off to Austin to the University of Texas. Royce loved his new found freedom and spent four years at UT with a major in Psychology and a minor in Math.
A year after leaving Austin, Royce married Genabel and they began their family. First was son Richard, then daughter Ruby, and finally another son Robin.
Also after college Royce worked various jobs – the longest of which were Southern Airways in Mineral Wells and then the Texas Department Of Transportation here in Glen Rose. He retired from TXDOT in 2002 after 25 years. Sometime in the middle of that 25 years he met and married Janet, and they’ve been together for 31 years. Along with Janet, Royce inherited a stepson, Billy Walton.
Royce’s most recent claim to fame has been his “42” prowess. With Clark Stewart as his partner, they won the trophy for the most 42 Tournament wins at the Senior Citizen’s Center, 7 years in a row, before stopping their participation this year for health reasons.
Royce was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Wynema Stacy and his sister: Lana Newman.
Royce is survived by his wife: Janet Stacy of Glen Rose, children: Richard Stacy and wife Renee of Aledo, Texas, Ruby Stacy-Davis and husband Chad of Fort Worth, Robin Stacy and wife Marilyn of Granbury, Will Walton and wife Kristy of Kenai, Alaska, grandchildren: Alicia, Kayla, Candace, Toby, Tasha, Chase and Harper, great grandchild, Stacy Jean, brother-in-law: Carl Newman, nephews: Stacy and Ronny, niece: Brandy and great nephew and niece: Alex and Emma.
