Sylvia Jeanne Carmichael Campbell passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2019. Service: 2:00 PM, Friday, May 10, 2019, Acton United Methodist Church, Interment: Granbury Cemetery, Visitation: 5:00 PM -7:00 PM, Thursday, May 9, 2019, Wiley Funeral Home Chapel, Granbury.
Sylvia was born January 6, 1937 in Dallas, Texas to Joseph L. and Margaret Surber Carmichael. She was a fourth generation Hood County resident.
Sylvia graduated from Granbury High School in 1955 and was the first female in her family to attend college. She graduated from the University of North Texas in three years and later earned her Masters from Tarleton State University. Sylvia married John Calvin (JC) Campbell on July 19, 1958 in Granbury, Texas.
Sylvia retired from Granbury ISD after 36 years as a Teacher, Principal and Administrator. She was an educator and a lifelong learner.
Sylvia and her husband JC raised three sons and hosted many exchange students from Central America during their 61 year marriage. She was the wife and mother of four volunteer firemen often sacrificing family gatherings and meals for their service to Granbury Volunteer Fire Department. Sylvia also helped start the Women’s Auxiliary for the Fire Department to help with food and drinks to the Fire Department and Rescue Unit members on the scene.
Sylvia and JC were founding members of the Hood County Bicentennial Commission in 1974 which later became the Shanley Park Association. Over the years she enjoyed her service with the Woman’s Wednesday Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Texas State Teachers Association,
Upon retirement she enjoyed working with Odyssey of the Minds, Granbury Lions Club, the USS Frank E. Evans (DD754) Association in the ship store and the Granbury Cemetery Board.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Michael Carmichael and David Carmichael.
She is survived by her husband JC Campbell of 61 years, sons and daughters-in-law John and Teresa Campbell, Jerry and Michelle Campbell, and Joel and Monica Campbell, nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, several cousins and extended family members.
